How many peer references are required at initial appointment?

How many peer references are required at initial appointment?  Can language be shared regarding this (peer in same specialty, etc.)?

    I currently work on the reappt team, but processed initial apps at my previous position (Atrium Health Navicent). We required 3 references and at least one of the 3 had to be in the same specialty. If they completed training in the last year (residency or fellowship), we obtained a reference from the Program Director. All 3 references had to be physicians and could not be family members.

    We require 2. If the applicant completed training within the last 5 years, we also get a program director evaluation.
